Croissant Crumble

Croissant Crumble

What is a Croissant?

Croissant Crumble

A croissant is a type of pastry, classically made with puff pastry dough so that it is light, flaky, and extremely buttery. Traditionally, croissants are formed into croissant shapes, which is probably where the name originated, since croissant means “croissant” in French. The pastries are extremely popular in France as well as in other nations, and are typically eaten with breakfast. In some cases, croissants may also be filled with sweet or savory ingredient, or used like bread to make croissant sandwiches.(Source: WiseGeek)

Sometimes we eat croissants for breakfast usually during weekdays when everybody is in a hurry in the morning. This is so delicious and filling! On one Sunday I wanted to try a different breakfast that is healthy and can be prepared in a short period of time. The 3 lonely croissants were staring at me, so thought of using them for my breakfast idea. The Curious George in me wanted to turn these croissants into a desi breakfast with all the veggies and spicy chilies.

Ingredients:
  • 3 Croissants, broken into small pieces
  • A bunch of Scallions (Green Onions), chopped fine
  • A small Onion (regular), chopped fine
  • A medium Tomato, chopped fine
  • 3 or 4 green Chilies, chopped fine
  • A handful of Cilantro
  • ¼ cup of green Peas, fresh or frozen
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • Some Curry leaves
  • Salt as required
For Seasoning/Tempering:
  • 1 tsp oil
  • ¼ tsp mustard seeds
  • ¼ tsp cumin seeds
  • ¼ tsp Bengal Gram (Pachi Senaga pappu, Chana Dal)
  • ¼ tsp Black Gram (Minapapappu, Urad Dal)

Method:
  1. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. When they splutter, add cumin + urad + chana and fry till the dals turn golden brown.
  2. Then add the chopped veggies (onions, tomato, green onions, cilantro, curry leaves, green chilies and green peas) along with turmeric and red chili and fry well until they are cooked well.
  3. Sprinkle some water if needed. Cover and leave for some time.
  4. When all the veggies are well cooked add the broken croissant pieces and mix well. Adjust salt.
  5. Leave the mixture for some time on medium low heat until the croissant pieces are mixed well with the veggies and absorb the essence.
  6. Transfer to a serving plate and enjoy hot with some orange juice (optional).
  7. This makes a perfect breakfast that can be prepared in a jiffy.

I love warm, buttery, flaky croissants but it's more of a once-in-while indulgence these days. Looks like bread upma but must be pretty delicious with croissants.
